So first off, what even is a load cell? A load cell is a unique device that is used to measure forces. These devices can contain one or multiple strain gauges inside of them. As the strain gauges have forces applied to them (these forces could be tension compression, shear, or torsion) they will change in resistance. By measuring this change in resistance, you can know the amount of force being applied to the strain gauges and therefore the load cell. Know you have a device that can measure the amount of weight hanging from it as is often used in crane scales and dynamometers.

So, how do you make sense out of this change in resistance? There are many different types of load cells that will give you access to measurement data differently. Some load cells will give you a raw mv/V output that is a direct measurement from the strain gauges. This can be measured directly or amplified and signal conditioned. Some load cells have this signal conditioning internal to the load cell and give you access to the measurement data in the form of an analog voltage or current signal.
