10 Ton Dynamometers

A 10-ton dynamometer is an incredibly versatile tool. When it comes to weighing while lifting or measuring tension, you’ll find this capacity of crane dynamometer to be suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

In this article, we’ll look at various ways you can use 10-ton dynamometers.

Overload Prevention

Overload prevention is one of the most basic and important applications for a dynamometer

To prevent overloads, accurately measuring the lifted object’s weight is critical. This helps keep not only personnel safe while on-site, but it also ensures the safety of the expensive equipment being used.

This is one of the main reasons why a high-quality dynamometer is a smart investment for companies across a wide range of industries.

Weighing During Manufacturing

10-ton dynamometers will have many uses during the manufacturing process. They can be used to weigh heavy raw materials, components, or finished products. For example, in a manufacturing plant that produces large machinery like cars or airplanes, a crane dynamometer might be used to weigh large components like engines or fuselage sections.

And by combining lifting and measuring into one step, they allow operators to streamline the process, saving time and money.

Inventory management

Another common use is to keep track of incoming and outgoing inventory by weighing shipments as they come in or go out.

For example, if a business is supposed to receive a shipment of steel, it can use a crane dynamometer to quickly verify that the delivery matches the invoice. This helps to maintain accurate records and can help identify any discrepancies with the order.

Or, they can also be used to weigh outgoing shipments. Here, a business can confirm that it’s sending out the correct quantities and monitor any discrepancies between the shipment weight and the inventory records.

Finally, a quality 10-ton dynamometer can help with accurate record-keeping by enabling the tracking and recording of accurate weight data. This data can be used for analysis and forecasting in stock management.

Proof Load Testing

A proof load test is a type of load test intended to verify that a given load-bearing structure or piece of hardware can handle the full capacity of its rated load without failure or deformation.

In proof load testing, a dynamometer is used to verify the load that’s being used  for testing.

The dynamometer must be calibrated to ensure accurate readings. During the test, it is attached to the structure or equipment being tested, and then the load is gradually increased until the required level is reached. The dynamometer measures and records the load in real time, providing data for changes in the force applied or system response.

If the equipment or structure being tested can withstand the applied force without any deformation or failure, it is said to have passed the proof load test. Conversely, if it deforms or fails under the applied force, it doesn't reach the requirements.

In general, dynamometers provide an accurate and reliable method for performing proof load tests, ensuring compliance with safety standards and performance specifications.

Bollard Pull Tests

Not all uses for 10-ton dynamometers are in lifting applications. For example, in a Bollard pull test, they’re used to measure force tension.

A bollard pull test is a process used to measure the pulling power, or traction, of a vessel, such as tugboats, workboats, or other marine vessels. This test is typically conducted by attaching a marine vessel to a shore bollard and measuring the maximum force that the vessel can exert, which helps to confirm the operational efficiency of the vessel’s engines, propellers, and overall performance.

A dynamometer is an essential component of a Bollard pull test as it displays and records the amount of tension the vessel can exert. For this application, it’s good to have at least IP67 protective sealing, which is available on all Eilon Engineering dynamometers.

The capacity you’ll need depends on the size of the vessel. A medium-sized tugboat may need a 25-ton dynamometer, while a large 100-foot tug may need a 100-ton dynamometer.

Controlled Cable Tensioning

Another application that involves tension rather than lifting is controlled cable tensioning of overhead electricity and communication lines.

Because the tension on the cable must be precise to avoid damage to the cable, a high-quality dynamometer with high accuracy is required.

With more than 45 years of experience, Eilon Engineering’s dynamometers are all backed by a 5-year warranty, so you’re guaranteed a quality system. And, our systems feature an industry-leading accuracy of 0.1% of the system’s full scale.

Weighing in Foundries

Our next application is a hot one—literally!

In a foundry or other environments with extreme heat, a dynamometer can play a vital role. In foundries, wireless or telemetry dynamometers help reduce costs and increase efficiency while also increasing safety by preventing dangerous overloads.

Further, telemetry dynamometers allow foundries to carefully control the addition of additives. This both prevents waste and gives the foundry greater control over its metal’s final composition.

Foundry ladles come in a variety of sizes, so while a 10-ton dynamometer may be a good fit, some foundries will require a larger capacity system, perhaps a 30-ton dynamometer or more.
