Digital Hanging Scale

A digital hanging scale is an industrial weight measurement used to measure the weight of objects or loads that are suspended from a crane or other lifting equipment. This type of heavy-duty crane scale is often used in heavy industries such as warehouses, lumber yards, foundries, shipbuilding, aerospace, metal fabrication plants, recycling centers, automotive manufacturing, and many more.

A digital hanging scale plays a big role in industrial weight measurement by ensuring on-site safety when conducting industrial lifting operations.

But not all digital hanging scales are created equal—there’s a big difference between a digital aka electronic hanging scale and its analog counterpart.

Digital hanging scale: the basics

There are two main varieties of commercial weighing devices: mechanical and digital.

Mechanical vs digital industrial hanging scales

Considering the technological advancements of the past few decades, you might think that all commercial weighing devices would be digital—after all, we are living in the digital age. But that isn’t the case.

Mechanical scales, which use springs and dials to measure and display a lifted load’s weight, are still somewhat common. And even though mechanical scales can be accurate to a certain degree, that accuracy will never match the high level of a quality digital overhead weighing scale.

On the other hand, a digital or electronic hanging scale gives operators a much higher degree of accuracy.

An electronic hanging scale features things like an LCD readout or display that shows a more accurate reading but can also be read from a much greater distance when compared to the display of a mechanical or analog scale. This is because a digital scale represents another level of load cell technology.

How digital hanging scales work

Modern digital crane scales make use of what’s known as a load cell. This is the weight-bearing element of any heavy-duty crane scale. Attached to the load cell body is something called a strain gauge. Strain gauges measure the slight change to the load cell body’s shape when force is applied to it, and then output an electric signal which is converted into a measurement. The system’s electronics then display the measurement as a readable unit of measurement, for example, pounds or kilograms.

A digital overhead weighing system with a strain gauge allows for more advanced load cell technology and a higher level of industrial crane scale accuracy.

Types of digital hanging scales

When choosing an electronic hanging scale, you might assume that finding a system that is both heavy-duty and portable wouldn’t be possible. But is it? Let’s explore.

Portable or heavy-duty crane scales?

What if we told you that you could have a portable hanging scale that’s also a heavy-duty crane scale? Well, you absolutely can!

At Eilon Engineering, our 50 years of experience has allowed us to create high-quality digital overhead weighing systems that are both incredibly lightweight and portable, but also robust. Due to their minimalist design, you can easily transport them to and around the job site, yet never have to worry about their strength or durability.

So yes, you can have the best of both worlds and find heavy-duty, portable hanging scales. Look no further than Eilon Engineering.

Wired vs. wireless crane scales

Another major consideration when purchasing a new industrial weight measurement device is whether it’s wired or wireless.

Both wired and wireless systems make use of industrial load indicators. But a wired crane scale connects its load cell directly to its industrial load indicator via a wire or cable. This is acceptable for many applications and uses, but it does have the safety risk of a tripping hazard while also limiting the operator's freedom of movement.

On the other hand, with wireless crane scales, the signal is wirelessly broadcast from the scale to a remote indicator. This type of advanced load cell technology uses either radio frequency (RF) or Bluetooth.

Common uses for a digital hanging scale

There are countless applications for portable hanging scales like those manufactured by Eilon Engineering. Here are some of the most common.

Overload prevention

Warehouse lifting scales are a vital component in preventing dangerous overloads when lifting heavy objects in a warehouse or similar industrial environment. Crane scales help operators prevent overloads before they even occur, increasing on-site safety.

Proof load testing

A proof load test is a type of load test conducted to ascertain the maximum working load of a structural component or system. It involves applying a predetermined load to confirm the structural integrity of the lifting equipment.

Weighing during manufacturing

Manufacturing processes can be optimized by utilizing warehouse lifting scales to weigh large objects. This allows operators to lift and measure in a single step, thereby eliminating the need for separate weighing stages, saving both time and reducing costs.

How to choose a new digital hanging scale

Quality

When it comes to commercial weighing devices, quality is a crucial factor. Ensure your new crane scale is made only of high-quality materials.

With five decades of experience, Eilon Engineering has earned a global reputation for using only the highest-quality materials in our crane scales, guaranteeing years of safe, reliable lifting and precise industrial crane scale accuracy.

Ease of use

All digital overhead weighing devices should be easy to operate. This saves valuable time during the learning phase and enhances safety.

Eilon Engineering systems are designed to be user-friendly, simple to operate, and can even be calibrated by the user.

Affordability

Affordability in industrial hanging scales goes beyond the list price. Heavy-duty crane scales that are durable will be more cost-effective in the long run. A longer-lasting system will save on maintenance and upkeep costs.
